| Duarte (Edward) was the first son of King João I. Prince Henry the
Navigator was his brother. Duarte was a scholar and philosopher. He was also a
man of great integrity, pious and conscientious, with a deep sense of his
obligations to his subjects. But he was also irresolute and unpractical, utterly
unsuited to rule over a turbulent medieval kingdom. His reign was difficult and
short.
He was persuaded by Prince Henry to an ill-conceived expedition against Tangiers which ended in disaster. Their young brother Fernão was taken as a hostage and imprisoned in Fez, where he later died. Duarte did not long survive the disaster. |
