Details Notes

Monumenta Henricina. 15 vols. (Coimbra, 1960-1974)

The book on Henry the Navigator - a collection of documents and contemporary accounts. Everything that ever involved Henry was to be included and the editor was apparantly fairly successful. I'll need a lot of time and Portuguese for this!

A Casa Senhorial Do Infante D. Henrique, Joao Silva de Sousa (Lisbon: Livros Horizonte 1991).

Contains maps tracing Henry's whereabouts, lists of positions in his household, etc.

"The Columbus Conspiracy" by Michael Bradley, A&B Book Publishers, Brooklyn., NY, ISBN 1-881316-11-4. Chapter 7 "The Portuguese Connection".

"A Missao Templaria Nos Descobrimentos", Rainer Daehnhardt , Edicoes Acropole, ISBN-972-9026-38-6

Interesting Templar book?

More on Antila

"Henry the Navigator: Master Teacher of Explorers", Charnan Simon

"Prelude to Empire: Portugal Overseas before Henry the Navigator", Bailey W. Diffie

"Prince Henry the Navigator", Edward G Bourne

"Prince Henry the Navigator, the Hero of Portugal & of Modern Discovery 1394-1460", Charles R Beazley

I think this is the arch-heroic version of Henry's life.

"A Wind from the North, the Life of Henry the Navigator", Ernle Bradford, Harcourt, Brace & Co. NY

Contains information on Ramon Lull's prophecy that the Portuguese would one day capture Ceuta and circumnavigate Africa.

"Historia da Igreja", Fortunato de Almeida

I'm told this has the best short account of the Portuguese military orders, and quotes documents from the early 1320s on number of knights and clerics in the Order of Christ at that time.
