Afonso IV
1325-1357

When Dinis died, his son Afonso succeeded him. He was brave, but headstrong. He went to the aid of the King of Castile (his son-in-law) in fighting off an attack by the Moors. He then agreed to the execution of his son Pedro's lover, Ines de Castro, in a great romantic tragedy. Lusiads p.93...
Afonso seems to have initiated long voyages to the west, probably to the Canaries, as early as the first quarter of the 14th Century. It is also conjectured that Madeira was discovered around this time, since it began to appear on maps from about 1350. CbM p. 290-292, p. 407
