Afonso III
1248 - 1279

Afonso III ('the brave') went on to conquer the Algarve from the Moors, fixing a border with Castile in 1267. He married the illegitimate daughter of Afonso of Castile, and his reign, like that of his neighbour, was a period of cultural advance, during which element of the Provencal civilisation were introduced. He took measures to emancipate the serfs, encouraged trade and introduced representation of the towns in the cortes. On his death he was suceeded by his son, Dinis. MRW p.199
